p-waste Initiative - preventing expired, unused, breakage household medicines reaching landfills and water supply system

Currently, there is no regulation of generic expiry medicines collection from Health Centres, Medical stores and Medical Stockiest. Due to this gap, facilities are disposing waste in haphazard and indiscriminate manner causing serious health hazards. Pharmaceutical waste includes all expired, unused, contaminated or discontinued drugs (also known as medicines or chemicals) that can no longer be used for humans or animals. Broadly speaking, pharmacy waste falls in one of two categories; it is either hazardous or non-hazardous (as defined by the EPA) to health.

    Objectives

 To collect & receive the Pharmaceutical Waste from PHC, CHC, DHs, Retail and Wholesale facilities

 To ensure proper storage of the wastes as per the classification, characterization and mode of treatment and disposal

 To optimize the storage and disposal cost by management practices and provide the very economical services to the retailers and wholesalers

 To educate and make the individuals of health centres, retail and wholesale business aware of storing the expiries, breakages and other wastes in a scientific manner

 To conduct the public awareness program Responsibilities

 To educate all regarding proper pharmaceutical wastes management.

 Take feedback from retailers, wholesalers for quality on services for continual improvements.

 Provide necessary training to the shop staff regarding handling wastes.

 Provide containers for storage and to track the necessary information and keep it in records.

 All the wastes collected should have proper label and details.

    Pharmaceutical Waste Collection

 We would provide waste collection service to all clients all business working days.

 Facility will have number of vehicles for waste collection with GPS enabled.

 We would assign number of clients per vehicle for smooth operations to collect the pharmaceutical waste.

 Check log sheet entries of waste collected from shops to ensure the proper services to our clients.

    Market Scenario:

In Chhattisgarh, there are approximately 4,500 health centres/sub centres and 12,000 shops who deal with pharma business (retailers, stockiest, C&F etc.).  Similarly, from the households also, many medicines get expired and thrown in the garbage or flush off in the toilet.

 No generic manufacturer, take back the expired generic medicines from the retailer, stockiest or C&F and these expired medications are settled personally.
